Students at Syosset’s Village Elementary School recently celebrated National Nutrition Month with activities that satisfied their appetite for fun. They wore glow-in-the-dark bracelets embossed with the words “Eat Right Be Bright,” a variation on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ 2013 slogan: “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day.”
Students sampled various healthy food options each Friday at lunch, such as smoothies, carrots with ranch dip, and Greek yogurt.
In addition, the nutrition committee challenged the children to identify the sugar and fat content in foods they often consume.
At mid-month, the kids attended a hi-tech assembly called Kid Power, Operation Lunch Line. Wearing 3-D glasses, the audience went on a virtual journey through the human digestive system, learning about the benefits of proper nutrition.
By month’s end, the children felt more empowered to make good food choices thanks to the efforts of PTA Chairperson Jean Pipia and the nutrition committee.
