Both Plan to Pursue Careers in Medical Field

Carey High School named its valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2010. David Nieves is the class valedictorian and Jeremy Poserio is the class salutatorian when the class graduates this coming June.

Academically, David is unmatched in every subject area. He simply has raised the bar and left many students shaking in awe as they witnessed his academic excellence. What is most impressive about David is that he is humble and modest and never boosts of his accomplishments. He is kind, considerate, and respectful and truly can be defined as a role model for others to emulate.

MTA Payroll Tax Comes Due

If you didn’t know about the tax on payroll to help fund the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, you do now. The payroll tax has come due Nov. 2 with business owners and municipalities and school districts having to fork over 34 cents for every $100 of payroll. The tax affects all businesses and municipalities including school districts, nonprofit organizations that have a payroll and hospitals within the areas that are serviced by the MTA including Nassau County.

Legislature Goes to Republicans

Nassau County residents have voted to change the leadership in the Nassau County Legislature as the Republican caucus has taken the majority of the 19-member Legislature for the first time in a decade. As of press time, the race for Nassau County Executive was still undecided as Democrat Tom Suozzi and Republican Ed Mangano were locked in a heated battle that may be decided by absentee ballots.

In the race for the Nassau County Legislature’s 3rd District, Legislator John Ciotti, a Republican, of North Valley Stream is running against challenger Nina Petraro Bastardi, a Democrat, of Valley Stream.

Taxes Are Key Issue Going Into Election

In less than a month, Long Island residents will be going to the polls to elect local officials for counties and towns. In Nassau County, the key issue is the ever-increasing tax burden on residents and property owners. In the 3rd Legislative District of the Nassau County Legislature, Democratic candidate Nina Petraro Bastardi and Republican incumbent John Ciotti both are making the reduction of taxes part of their campaign, although their approaches differ.

Muscarella, Tumminello Vie for 8th Legislative District Seat

On Nov. 3, residents of the Nassau County’s 8th Legislative District will choose their representative in the Nassau County Legislature for the next two years. Incumbent Vincent Muscarella is being challenged by Gaspare Tumminello. The district encompasses Franklin Square, Stewart Manor, West Hempstead, Garden City and Garden City South as well as parts of Elmont and Floral Park.
