At this time, I would like to reaffirm my strong opposition to County Executive Ed Mangano’s proposal to shut down the 5th Police Precinct in Elmont. Public safety is too important an issue to be politicized. The 5th Precinct is a vital part of the Elmont, Franklin Square, West Hempstead, Valley Stream, North Valley Stream, South Floral Park, and Bellerose Terrace communities. Any plan to reduce the number of officers working in the 5th Precinct would be disastrous for residents.
On Feb.2, I spoke at a community meeting at the Elmont Public Library regarding the proposal to close the 5th Precinct. County Executive Mangano sent two representatives to the meeting who could not answer basic questions as to the details and feasibility of this proposal. Residents at the meeting made it clear that they were not in support of the proposal and vowed to oppose the plan.County Executive Mangano can do his best to try and put lipstick on a pig. At the end of the day, the plan to shut down the 5th Precinct is still a pig. As the son of a Nassau County police officer, I understand firsthand just how important it is for police precincts to remain fully staffed. Police precincts perform many vital roles, and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being truthful. Please not that I have not received any donation or contribution from the PBA and this effort is strictly for the benefit of my community. I encourage residents to call Legislator Becker at 516-571-6206, Legislator Belesi at 516-571-6214, and Legislator Muscarella at 516-571-6208. Tell all three that you are opposed to this plan.
I urge County Executive Mangano to reevaluate his plan to close the 5th Precinct. I urge all residents to contact County Executive Mangano at his office, 516-571-3131. Tell him that you have had enough. In addition, I encourage all residents to attend a community meeting this Saturday at the Franklin Square Public Library.
The Library is located at 19 Lincoln Road in Franklin Square, and the meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. I am also encouraging residents to attend a community rally outside the 5th Police Precinct in Elmont. The rally will begin at 11 a.m. Together, we as a community must stand up to Mangano’s attempts to play politics with public safety.
