Last Thursday, the Carle Place Girls Softball team recorded one of the most exciting come-from-behind victories in local sports history.
After being down 11 runs, 13 to 2 in the fifth inning, the Fightin' Frogs mounted a furious comeback to win 15 to 14 on a Jessica Hart single, scoring Jen Whitley with one out and bases loaded in the seventh inning.
Carle Place scored first in the bottom of the first inning when left-fielder Allison Holm scored on a Kim Bruckner single. The game then settled into a pitcher's duel as pitcher Lauren D'Onofrio held Jericho scoreless through four innings.
First baseman Diane Diglio recorded four put-outs as Jericho was unable to get the ball out of the infield against D'Onofrio. The Frogs scored again in the bottom of the fourth when right fielder Jessica Hart got her first clutch hit of the game, a two-out single to right, scoring shortstop Jen Whitley.
The Frogs two-run lead evaporated in the fifth inning as Jericho combined five singles, two doubles, two triples and five walks to take a 13 to 2 lead.
The scoring was cut short by all-county catcher Kelly Robertson, who, after a ply at home, threw from her knees to Kim Bruckner covering second base and nailed a Jericho runner trying to stretch a single into a double. Carle Place came back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth on a series of walks and infield hits, but remained down 13 to 7 with only two innings remaining.
The never say die Frogs battled back in the sixth, as shortstop Jen Whitley shut down the Jericho offence with back-to-back plays to second and third and then ended the inning with a sparkling catch of a screaming line drive that was still rising when she caught it.
In the home sixth, Carle Place scored three times to close the gap to 13 to 10 on a single by Kim Bruckner, a triple by Jen Whitley, a double by relief pitcher Cristen Morrissey, and a single by third baseman Jana Bello.
Jericho scored one run in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 14 to 10, but the rally was cut short as shortstop Jen Whitley scooped up a low line drive and threw to Jana Bello at third for a double play. Jericho's inning was finally over when centerfielder Laura Mila raced into the gap in right center to catch the final out.
The Frogs were down by four runs as they batted in the bottom of the seventh, but the Jericho pitchers could not find the plate and, after loading the bases, walked in Lauren D'Onofrio and Allison Holm to bring Carle Place to within two runs.
Cristen Morrissey then singled in one run, Jana Bello walked to tie the game, and Jessica Hart finally
ped the comback with a single to left, scoring Jen Whitley.
Cristen Morrissey, pitching in relief, recorded her first win of the year, allowing only one run over the last two innings as the Frog's defense stiffened.
Carle place, now 8 and 3, is currently in second Place in Conference IIC and seeking its first playoff berth.
