On Sept. 8, Westbury Schools closed the book on summer and opened its doors as administrators, teachers, staff, and students returned to begin the 1998-'99 school year. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Pinckney was on hand to visit all of the schools in the district. "It's nice to see all of the young faces back and ready to learn," said Dr. Pinckney. "Our students made great academic strides last year, and I am looking forward to yet another year of progress.

The first day of school is always a busy and hectic time for everyone involved. This year was no different, especially for the 48 new teachers in the district along with the returning teachers, who spent the day fielding questions from students and putting the final touches on their lesson plans. Students were busy adjusting to their new classes and learning what they will be responsible for this year.
The excitement of the new school year was apparent throughout all the grade levels. From the Pre-K and kindergarten students at Dryden Street School who are just beginning their academic careers, to the seniors at Westbury High School who are concluding their tenure at Westbury, there was a feeling of anticipation as to what the new school year would bring.
Dr. Pinckney expressed the hope that the anticipation and excitement could be channeled into a successful school year for all. "We are utilizing all of the resources available to us to enhance curriculum and we will take the necessary steps to ensure that all of our students take full advantage of their educational opportunities."
