By his first-ever start as a member of the varsity baseball team, Giancarle Ciolino pitched a perfect game for The Wheatley School. A JV player at the start of the season, Giancarlo, a sophomore, was promoted to the varsity squad and responded with an 11 strikeout, 78 pitch performance.

Giancarle Ciolino recently pitched a perfect game for The Wheatley School.

Despite arm and shoulder discomfort earlier this season, Giancarlo kept the East Rockaway batters off-stride by mixing off-speed pitches with a blazing fastball. The Wheatley records book indicates that Mike Ferrara pitched a no-hitter during the 1985 season, but it is believed that this is the first perfect game in the history of Wheatley baseball.

Wheatley defeated East Rockaway 12-10 in a game that was played on Saturday, April 17 at the Baseball Heaven Sports Complex in Suffolk County. Everything seemed to click for the Wildcats as they pounded out 17 hits and played errorless baseball. Catcher Mike Hopkins led the attack with a home run and three RBIs. Steve Messer had a perfect day at the plate, going three for three with three RBIs, and John Arciuolo was four for four. The win evened the Wheatley record to 2-2.
