According to detectives, 1st Precinct Police Officers responded to a call for a lost wallet at a Broadway residence. Once inside the home, police officers allege that defendant Ana Mendoza, 42, was unsteady on her feet and had a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her breath. Police report that Mendoza told them her wallet was missing and that she had eight beers to drink. The officers also noticed that her 2-year-old twin daughters were partially clothed and that there were feces and broken glass on the floor. The defendant, who was alone in the home, also told officers that she was two months pregnant.
Nassau County Police Ambulance #2373 transported the children to an area hospital for evaluation. They were released to Child Protective Services upon completion of the medical evaluation.
Mendoza was arrested and is being charged with endangering the welfare of a child. She was arraigned March 25 in First District Court, Hempstead by Judge Norman Janowitz. Bail was set at $500. Additionally, the judge issued orders of protection on behalf of Mendoza's twin daughters. If convicted, Mendoza will receive a maximum of a year in jail.
Mendoza's arrest comes a little over a month after New Cassel resident Latrice Brewer was arrested for allegedly murdering her three children.
