Children’s Program Expands

The Westbury Children’s Library will be offering its popular Circle Time and Toy Center program on Monday mornings throughout January and February at the Town of North Hempstead ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center.

The five-week program is open to children ages six months to four years old and their parent/caregiver. Each hour-long session will feature 15 minutes of song, stories and rhymes along with 45 minutes of free play time, led by library staff. Sessions will take place in the center’s new reading room.

“Our Friday morning Circle Time has been so successful we decided to collaborate with the ‘Yes We Can’ center in an effort to reach out to other areas of the community,” said Emily Farrell, Head of Children’s at the Westbury Library, noting that the goal is to reach those residents who may not be regular library users and stress the importance of early literacy programming.

“Parents need to play an active role in facilitating necessary literacy skills, beginning at a young age,” she said. “Early literacy programming is an important first step in a child’s future success in school.”

“From the planning stages, we conferred with the library for assistance on programming and this particular upcoming program focuses on early learning, something that is so important,” said April Brown Lake, Director of the ‘Yes We Can’ Center.

The partnership with the library, she added, offers yet another avenue for residents to utilize the center’s many services. “Hosting these programs here not only helps the Library enhance their services but also provides residents with another way to capitalize on them and the Center,” Brown Lake said.

The sessions at the community center will not replace those held regularly on Friday mornings in the Westbury Children’s Library.

The Circle Time and Toy Center program at the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center, located at 141 Garden Street, will take place on Mondays, Jan. 13, 20, and 27, and Feb. 3 and 10 from 10 to 11 a.m. Registration is not required and attendance at all sessions is welcome. Residents need not be members of the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center to attend. For more information, call the Westbury Memorial Public Library at 516-333-0176 or visit
