With a 39-37 lead at the end of the third quarter in a game against Newark Central High School, from the Rochester area, on Saturday, March 20, the Westbury High School Green Dragons were just one quarter away from playing for the state championship. However, Newark would outscore Westbury 18-9 in the final quarter, ending the Green Dragons’season. However, the loss can’t take away from the outstanding seasons coach Dave Graff and the boys had.
Who could forget the dramatic win against Harborfields, giving Westbury it first Long Island championship since 1996?
With the score tied at 56 on Saturday, March 13 against Harborfields, senior captain Lamard Herron forced a jump ball with six second left. After Westbury gained controlled, junior Sheldon Hagigal, who finished with a game high 33 points, then dribbled down the court and took a jump shot from the right elbow of the free throw line that rattled in to win the game at the buzzer.
Elation ensued after the game among many generations of the Westbury alumni, faculty and community members who attended this game at Hofstra University.
Then, there was the Green Dragons’ win against Elmont in the Nassau Class A championship game. The Green Dragons jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and never relinquished it. The scoring was balanced for Westbury as Hagigal had 13 points; Tyrece Redd contributed 9 points; Herron posted 8 points and Paris Abrams and Luckens Victor each added 7 points. Mikel Hooks contributed a point in the win. Westbury was able to avenge two earlier season losses to Elmont to propel them into the Long Island Class A championship game.
Congratulations to the Westbury Green Dragons for a season to remember.
