On June 2, the Carle Place School Board announced that Superintendent W. Michael Mahoney will retire on Sept. 20, and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Personnel David J. Flatley, of Levittown, will be the next superintendent of schools.
“During his tenure with our district, Mr. Mahoney has exceeded our expectations and led the district through five years of solid academic growth and fiscal stability,” stated Carle Place Board of Education President Peter Fitzgerald. “His boundless energy and attention to detail was invaluable as we completed the work of the 2004 Bond Issue and a multitude of other important facilities upgrades. We also appreciate his foresight in leading the development of our Repair and Capital Reserve Funds, which will help to build a solid financial footing well into the future. We wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement as he enjoys the opportunity to spend more time with his wife, Connie, and their children and grandchildren.”
Fitzgerald added, “Mr. Flatley has the experience, knowledge, compassion and passion to maintain the high standards of the Carle Place School District. The school board feels confident that Mr. Flatley will make an excellent superintendent.”
Before joining Carle Place in 2003, Flatley served as the assistant superintendent for instruction in the South Country School District. In addition to working in education for over 30 years, his experience includes service as a building principal, department chairman in mathematics and science, adjunct assistant professor of education and 15 years of classroom teaching.
Fitzgerald stated that the district will seek a replacement for Flatley. “He has done an exceptional job in his current position and we look forward to the growth and development of the Carle Place School District under his direction,” Fitzgerald added.
In regard to his new position, Flatley stated, “I am humbled by the board’s confidence and thrilled by the opportunity to serve as superintendent; however, it is with sadness that I recognize that this announcement signals the end of my daily working relationship with my mentor and friend, Mike Mahoney. During the past five years, Mr. Mahoney has demonstrated an unflagging commitment to the students, staff and faculty of our school district and has unfailingly championed the cause of Carle Place Schools.”
“As Mike and his lovely wife, Connie, transition into the next phase of life together, I count on their friendship, support and sage advice and I thank them both for their fine stewardship of our school community,” said Flatley.
Flatley expressed he enjoys spending time with his wife of 23 years, Nan, who is a third-grade teacher in Oyster Bay, and their four children, Kaitlyn, 19, Meaghan, 17, Kevin, 15, Michaela, 12, and their 10-year-old yellow lab, Bailey. The Carle Place Board of Education will formalize the announcement at their next meeting, scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 8 p.m. in the Carle Place High School’s North Cafeteria.
