The Hon. John Joseph Kennelly, of Mattituck, died on June 25, 2011. He was born April 11, 1923 in Brooklyn. He is survived by his children, Katherine Butler of Collingswood, NJ; Teresa Kennelly of Hillsborough, NJ; Loretta Prizzi of Greensburgh, PA; Roseanne Karmel of Tom’s River, NJ; Thomas Kennelly of Kokomo, IN; Mathew Kennelly of Ridge, NY; John Kennelly of East Rockaway, Nora Scaglione of Tonawanda, NY; Martha Kennelly of Mattituck; and Paul Kennelly of Tom’s River, NJ. He was predeceased by his wife Katherine and his son Peter. His wife Katherine died in 2007, they were married for 58 years.
He was Mayor of Westbury from 1960-1965, a Knight of Columbus and a Barbershop Quartet singer. John was a retired defense attorney and an ardent Pro Life activist. He enjoyed walking the beautiful East End, birdwatching, singing in the choir at Our Lady of Good Counsel and playing golf. His children honored his deep faith, unique sense of humor and independent thinking. He was involved in a number of volunteer organizations, including offering assistance to people needing transportation to their doctor appointments.
Grandfather to 33 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
