On June 9, nearly 400 community members participated in this year’s Relay for Life of Carle Place. Though we were unsure if the weather was going to affect our event, we were determined to have a successful night. After a couple of rain showers, the sun decided to shine and our event was kicked off with a beautiful survivor reception.
The opening ceremonies began with a presentation of colors from Boy Scout Troop #305 and the singing of the national anthem by Jenna Curialle. We then officially began our Relay with our survivor and caregiver laps followed by team members walking around the track listening to the music of the band Save it for Later. The luminaria ceremony proved to be beautiful, emotional and inspiring with luminaria bags illuminating the track with names of loved ones who have battled or are currently battling cancer. The night continued with teams walking the track – sometimes walking backwards or running in relay teams. Teams were fundraising, Relayers were dunking people in the dunk tank, eating at the barbecue and playing games like our would you eat this?” contest, Twister and “name that tune” or dancing with The Dancin’ Place and doing Zumba with Tracie Marasco. But, what the night was really about was a community coming together to celebrate, remember and fight back.
Our overnight event was a great success. We generated $50,000 to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. We want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to every Relayer for coming out and showing your support and for joining together to put up a strong fight against cancer. We would like to especially thank our committee members, Mary Abbatiello, Nancy Amalfitano, Linda Spangler, Kathleen Porrello, Racheal Martines and Irene Zaino for their hard work, dedication and determination. Without each of you our event would not have been possible or run as smoothly as it did.
We’d also like to send a special thank you to the merchants and vendors who donated not only their goods and services, but their time as well. They include Rialto Restaurant, Passione Restaurant, The Village Deli, Waldbaum’s, Chicken Delight, Starbucks, Five Star Food Products, Inc., Island Jumps Amusement & Rentals and Arnold Bread. A special thank you to Mr. David Flately, superintendent of schools; Mr. Neil Connolly, principal of Carle Place High School and Thomas Szajkowski director of facilities and operations, along with the custodial and grounds crews for allowing us to use the high school fields and school before, during and after the event. Additionally we would like to thank the Carle Place Fire Department for helping to run our barbecue and for providing EMS services during the night. Lastly, but certainly not least thank you to the CPCA, The Frog Horn, Our Lady of Hope Church and The Westbury Times for keeping all of our community members in the loop with Relay news and updates!
This year’s Relay for Life of Carle Place was truly an exciting and successful event and we couldn’t have done it without all of you. Thank you for making a difference!
