I hope this letter finds you all healthy and rejuvenated from a wonderful summer. I would like to congratulate everyone who participated in this year’s Relay for Life for making it a huge success! Together as a community of friends, families and neighbors, we raised a whopping $80,606!
The Relay for Life of Carle Place could not have been possible without the help from some really amazing community/committee members, friends, staff at Carle Place High School, and Lisa Schack, our director from the American Cancer Society (ACS)! This year, it was great to give up some of my responsibilities and have various committee members take them over. Each committee member involved in the planning and execution of the event did a fabulous job! The entire committee was a pleasure to work with and did a great job of keeping in focus of why we put this event together; it would have been impossible without you!
The final statistics from our relay included 559 registered participants and 40 teams. Nassau County overall had a remarkable year, raising over $1 million from their entire Relay for Life events. As ACS’s mission is to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer though research, education, advocacy and service, you will be happy to know that 89 cents of every dollar from Relay for Life goes to cancer research!
In order to keep Relay for Life going in our town and decrease the chances of stretching community members and resources thin, the committee and I have decided that it would be best to skip one year. This said, even though we will not have a Relay for Life in 2010, however, there will be one in 2011! The date will be included in the school calendar you receive at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.
In the interim, I, along with those interested will be learning and becoming involved in several other of ACS’s fundraisers such as Daffodil Days, strides, galas and other Relay for Life events as well as partaking in ACS conferences so we can learn how to make this event better for 2011! We will keep in touch through emails to update you on various events and happenings, but ACS events can also be viewed at www.cancer.org under ‘join the fight against cancer.’
Thank you again for choosing to be involved in what has become a remarkable community event filled with laughter, tears, memories, determination and hope to make a difference in the lives of everyone around us!
