The W.T. Clarke High School varsity baseball team won the Nassau County Class A Championship against Plainedge at Farmingdale College recently. The team, under the direction of head coach Tom Abruscato, cruised to a 10-3 victory and a two-game sweep against the Red Devils, which secured the team’s fifth Nassau County crown in the last 11 years and the first since 2009.
Members of Westbury High School’s Boys and Girls Varsity Track Teams were recently recognized as Scholar Athletes. The top 12 runners on the boy’s team had a 90.49 average and the top 12 girl runners had a 91.59 cumulative average.
The boy’s team was led by coach Donald Ross. Congratulations to Brendan Alert (10), Reginald Calixte (10), Everton Gibson (10), Carlos Ibarra Cruz (11), Guy Kirton (12), Dave Lacroix (10), Lys Pierre (11), Anthony Preston (10), Akeem Sherriffe (12), Yano St. Preux (12), Winston Wellington (12), and Corey Wellington (9).
The girl’s team was led by head coach Darin Harrison and assistant coach Phil Schlansky. Congratulations to Claudia Cham (10), Aylia Doomes (11), Stephanie Dorce (11), Maria Eustache (11) Jael Ferguson (9), Sabrina Guerrier (11), Rose jean-Louis (10), Danielle Pitter (10), Danielle Ramsey (11), Willermine Taloute (11), Renee Watson (11) and Denisha West (9).
In a close match between two Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) teams, Carle Place Lady United shut out the Dix Hills Destroyers, 1-0, in the Girls-Under-10 Arch Capital Group Cup final on June 8 at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview. The match for Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) supremacy was played 8 vs. 8. Leah Iglesias scored the only goal of the game and Carle Place keeper Victoria Dieguez had the shutout.
“Dix Hills was phenomenal,” commented Carle Place coach Hadiah Chiappone. “But we got an early lead and we were able to make it stand up.”
Carle Place also received the Howard Rubenstein Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Carle Place Lady United is sponsored by Arch Capital Group.
In soccer, size doesn’t always matter.
Just take one look at Long Island Fury striker Karin Simonian, who at 5’2 has turned into a scoring terror in the Women’s Premier Soccer League this season.
The Carle Place High School Varsity Field Hockey Team recently won first in the Dowling College Tournament. The team beat Sayville, Harborfields, Comsewogue, and West Islip to get to the Finals vs. Rocky Point. The final game was tied at the end of regulation time, but the team won in overtime on Shannon McGuinness’ goal and the outstanding goal keeping of Lydia Rice.
Deidree Golbourne has been running track and field all four years she has been at Westbury High School. Her passion for the sport comes from knowing that “you can put your all into it. It’s not a team sport where you have to depend on other people. You get out as much as you put into it.”
Golbourne is also seeded fourth in the state for discus throwing. She says that when she initially picked up discus her freshman year, she wasn’t a fan.
The U.S. Tennis Association Eastern Long Island Region recently honored Westbury resident Susan Alvy at a celebratory dinner, presenting her with the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement Award for her longtime commitment to tennis. The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury hosted the 23rd annual awards dinner, which honors tennis champions from Nassau and Suffolk County.
Madeline Seims plays on the Clarke HS JV lacrosse team. Seims, who is a ninth grader, ended up the leading scorer of the 2013 season.

Avenging the previous day’s loss and moving themselves one step closer to a possible county title, the Carle Place Frogs Softball team beat out the Locust Valley Falcons Wednesday, May 15 in a game two rematch for the Nassau County Class B Semi-Final, 12-3.
