Carle Place senior Mellissa Duarte will be a member of the Holy Cross Division 1 soccer team starting in the fall of 2012.
CP soccer started nine years ago with only the last five years as a varsity team. Mellissa has been playing on the CP varsity team four out of the five years. In those four seasons, Mellissa has played a major part in the team’s success. In 2008 the girls made it to the county final 4, 2009 conference champions and 2010 the team made it to the county finals.
On Friday night, Feb. 3, the Carle Place girl’s varsity basketball team hosted Wheatley in their usual Conference B matchup but the night was anything but usual.

The New York Islanders will play the first-ever NHL game at Barclays Center on Tuesday, Oct. 2, when they take on the New Jersey Devils at 7:30 p.m. The preseason game will mark the first hockey event at Barclays Center, the new major sports and entertainment venue, which will officially open on Sept. 28 with the first of multiple Jay-Z concerts. The game will also mark the first NHL game to be played in Brooklyn.
“We’re extremely excited to play the first NHL game in the new, state-of-the-art Barclays Center,” Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. “We already have some of the most passionate fans in the league supporting our young team, and we are looking forward to expanding our base into Brooklyn.”
Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board invite all residents to join the hundreds of other brave souls who will dive into the frigid waters at North Hempstead Beach Park for the 8th annual Polar Plunge. Sponsored by the Special Olympics, the “Freezin’ for a Reason” Polar Plunge will be held at North Hempstead Beach Park on March 3. Registration will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and the Plunge will start at noon.
“Besides being a great event to socialize with family, friends and neighbors and engage in friendly and fun rivalry, the Annual Polar Plunge gives everyone the opportunity to raise funds for a worthy cause,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said. “I look forward to seeing you there.”
“Home ice advantage” is a common expression used throughout the National Hockey League, and one usually utilized for good reason: as of Jan. 16, only two out of the 30 NHL teams had a winning percentage below .500 on home ice.
For New York Islanders’ forwards Matt Martin and Matt Moulson, playing at the Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum represents more than just a statistical advantage as the two athletes host a different member of the armed forces and his or her family for each of the team’s 41 home games. Win or lose, regulation, overtime or shootout, Martin and Moulson meet with their guests after games near the Islanders’ locker room – where, uncharacteristically, hockey isn’t the only topic of conversation.
Members of the Carle Place Varsity Soccer team recently attended an awards dinner at the Uniondale Marriot hotel. Top 10 goal scorers for Conference 8B/C were Guiseppe Altadonna, Adam Cabrera (not pictured), Rui Gomes (not pictured) and Joseph Hughes. Matt Sheehan (Holy Trinity High School) and Rory Walsh (Kellenberg High School) grew up on opposite sides of town and have been competing against each other since their elementary school days.
First, the boys squared off in the SMAA Flag Football League and later in Williamsport Baseball – Matt for Central Nassau Little League and Rory for East Meadow League. They squared off in CYO as well with Matt representing St. Brigid’s and Rory, St. Raphael. It seems only fitting that they are still competing and being recognized for their hard work in the Catholic High School Football League.
