On Monday, Aug. 22, Westbury Okinawan Karate, which is offered by the Westbury Recreation Department, had its formal Summer Testing and pizza party. Ten students, met the attendance requirements and proficiency skills who required were tested. A few students who did not fill the requirements or could not attend will be tested at a special testing to be announced.
The following students passed their test and were advanced to the next belt level:
Dragon Team - (6 to 10 year olds)
1st Kyu – Brown Belt with stripe – Christina Bonaparte and Tyler Bonaparte
3rd Kyu – Green Belt with stripe - Isabella Escorza
5th Kyu – Blue Belt - Davesh Valagolam
7th Kyu – Gold Belt with stripe – Maxwell Brown
9th Kyu – Purple Belt – Alexandre Petion
Ninja Team – (11 year to teens)
9th Kyu – Purple Belt – James Alexandro, Thomas Reardon, Billy Sargent and Joey DiMeo
Following Monday night’s test, the dojo had its traditional Reception Party. Pizza, soda and snacks were enjoyed by all of the students and their families. A few Blackbelts from Sensei John’s Association were on hand to assist in the testing. They were Marcel Toussaint - 4th Dan, Greg Abram – 2nd Dan and Aniello Discala – 1st Dan.
This year marks the eighth anniversary of Westbury Okinawan Karate and its association with the Westbury Recreation Department. The program was started to bring a traditional Okinawan style of karate to the village. The program, coordinated by Sensei John Power—4th Dan runs a continuous program that eventually leads to Black belt and beyond. The school accepts children 6 years of age up to adults.
