Westbury’s Susan Schmuck and her son Johnny recently scored big in the Sands Point 5 Kilometer Sprint for the Feinstein Institute. Ten-year-old Johnny won first place in the 10 and under category, with a finishing time of 23 minutes, 22 seconds. Susan, 46, earned the second place plaque in the Athena weight division. She finished in 27 minutes, 22 seconds. She says that the course was beautiful, but one of the more challenging 5Ks in Long Island because of the steep hills.
Susan has been running for almost four years, and says she enjoys it even more now that her son has a love of the sport. The two have run several races together, many of them for charitable causes.
“Running for a good cause makes it even sweeter. You’re out there to compete but also raise money,” she said.
