The Town of North Hempstead will be holding a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball tournament at the North Hempstead “Yes We Can” Community Center from Saturday, Jan.18 through Monday, Jan. 20.
“This tournament is a wonderful way of gathering the community together and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle,” said Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth.
There will be two tournaments for children in grades 4 through 9. The girls tournament will be held Saturday, Jan. 18 beginning at 9 a.m. and the boys tournament will be held Sunday, Jan. 19 beginning at 9 a.m. The entry fee for a team of up to 12 players is $150 with an additional $30 fee for officials. All teams are guaranteed to play at least three games. Participants are asked to bring their own uniforms.
The “Yes We Can” Community Center will also be hosting two 3-On-3 tournaments on Monday, Jan. 20 at 9 a.m. The tournament is open to boys and girls grades 4 through 12, and there is also a division for adults. There is an entry fee of $40 per team.
“Inviting children into our community center is an ideal way to spend the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday,” Town Councilwoman Viviana Russell said. “I expect tournaments such as these to become a fixture at the ‘Yes We Can’ Community Center for many years to come.”
The new state-of-the-art 60,000 square foot “Yes We Can” Community Center is located at 141 Garden Street in Westbury. The facility has two NBA-sized basketball courts where the tournament will take place. Other features of the center include a fitness center, internet café, computer rooms, community meeting rooms, senior and teen lounges and more.
