On Nov. 1 at home, the 8-year-old Chiefs kept to their winning ways as they defeated the Uniondale Knights 32-19. This brought the Chiefs winning record to 7-1 and secured a first round home game in the playoffs.
The Chiefs offense was able to control the tempo of the game behind fundamentally sound blocking by the offensive line of Michael LaGinestra, Patrick McTiernan, Matty O’Connell, Anthony Giunta, Dylan Vincenti and Spenser Warantz. Powerful running by Chiefs quarterback Michael O’Connell and running backs Andrew Casoria, Matthew Sluka, Lance Costa, Jason Eccher, Thomas Albig and Jack Duff helped Mineola control the ball throughout the game. The Chiefs opened up their passing attack as O’Connell completed passes to Costa, Sluka and Vincenti.
The Chiefs defensive of Matt Grimm, Aidan Hornberger, Joe Martello, Kevin Parente, Michael Sinisi, Chris Marshiano, Ryan Calderone and Andrew Cho kept the heated pressure on Uniondale’s offense throughout the game. Linebackers O’Connell and Sluka furiously attacked the Knights and finished them off.
All the boys played in the game and contributed to the victory. Scoring is summarized as follows:
• Michael O’Connell: 10-yard touchdown pass to Lance Costa (xpoint failed); 25-yard touchdown run (xpoint pass to Matt Sluka); 17-yard touchdown run (xpoint failed)
• Matt Sluka: 35-yard touchdown run (O’Connell xpoint pass to Dylan Vincenti); 38-yard touchdown run (xpoint failed)
